Emergency Vehicles in Response Mode

Purpose: 

This policy states the requirements for actions to be taken by all personnel operating emergency vehicles in response mode when approaching intersections.

Policy: 
  • Lights and Siren Required
    • All personnel operating emergency vehicles in a response mode are required and shall operate the emergency lights and siren while approaching and proceeding through any and all intersections.
  • Red and Inoperable Signals
    • All personnel operating emergency vehicles in a response mode are required and shall stop at any and all intersections with steady burning or flashing red signals.
    • All personnel operating emergency vehicles in a response mode are required and shall stop at any and all intersections where signals are inoperable.
  • Stop Signs
    • All personnel operating emergency vehicles in a response mode when approaching any and all intersections with stop signs are required and shall yield the right of way to other vehicles and pedestrians approaching, or, present in the intersection, which may require bringing the emergency vehicle to a complete stop, prior to proceeding through the intersection.
    • Where there are no vehicles or pedestrians approaching, or, present in the intersection, personnel operating emergency vehicles are permitted to continue through the intersection with due regard to the safety of persons and property. The driver must determine with absolute certainty that no other vehicles or pedestrians are approaching, or, present in the intersection.
    • All personnel operating emergency vehicles are required and shall ensure all vehicles approaching, or, present at the intersection have come to a complete stop and are yielding to the emergency vehicle prior to moving the emergency vehicle through the intersection.
